Professor Peter J. Thompson joins the Charlotte School of Law faculty from the Defender Association of Philadelphia, where he served as trial and appellate counsel for over a decade. Most recently Professor Thompson served as the Director of the Defender Immigration Project. In this role he provided immigration consultation services for non-citizen clients, provided direct representation of non-citizens in notable cases, created and directed a clinical experience program, and trained and advised members of the bar and bench regarding the immigration consequences of criminal convictions. During his tenure with the Defender Association, Professor Thompson also taught at Rutgers School of Law–Camden, in the pre-law curriculum at Villanova University, coached a trial team at Temple Law, and founded and directed the Defender Collateral Consequences Project. In addition to teaching he produced multiple practice resources requested by attorneys nation-wide. He is often called to guest lecture at law schools, colleges and universities regarding both immigration and trial advocacy. Prior to law, Professor Thompson taught on the Navajo Nation for several years and worked as a journalist for the Irish News in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He holds an LL.M. in Trial Advocacy, with honors, from the Temple University James E. Beasley School of Law, a J.D. from Villanova University School of Law, a M.Ed. from Widener University School of Education, and a B.A. from Villanova University.
